Mark Ingwersen

Mark Ingwersen, Spirit Lake, has been a Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner for over 25 years for Dickinson County. He has served the Conservation Districts of Iowa as state vice president in the past. He is a farmer living near the Iowa Great Lakes, which allows him to approach water and soil quality from three different aspects.

“The need to protect what we have is a common characteristic of both rural and urban residents of the area,” said Ingwersen. “We all see the natural beauty in what we have and how lucky we are to have these natural resources. There is a need to maintain and improve them. That’s the driving force behind what we’ve been able to accomplish at a local and district level.”

Ingwersen has been involved with SWCD and is also a board member on the Iowa Lakes RC & D. He has seen a lot of change to the Iowa Great Lakes over the years. “A lot of the siltation occurred the lakes in the 1940s and ‘50s; and the SWCD initiated concentrated conservation efforts in the poorer quality lakes in the 1980s. We’ve gotten a lot of those areas protected but we have got a lot of other issues to work on.”

Mark has been farming row crops and alfalfa for 32 years and has a Red Angus cow-calf operation. Mark has also implemented conservation structures on his acres including sediment basins, terraces, waterways and has planted trees.

He holds a B.S. from Iowa State University. He and his wife, Kim, have three children. He is a member of Dickinson County Cattlemen, Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus.
